Workplace – 5 Tips to help you get over a bad day at work.

Workplace members help each other to celebrate to good times and get through the bad times. No matter how much you love your job, there is always going to be a time when you put your head in your hands and sigh deeply! At these points, the motivation to rush out and drink heavily, eat chocolate or kick the cat is huge. However, we all know that while these might help us momentarily to get rid of our frustration, they are not the ways to get over your bad day.
We asked our Workplace family for their number one tip when things are just not going the way you would like them to.
Workplace Tip # 1 Breathe in fresh air
Walk, get out of the office and walk away from your troubles. Many said they also put headphones on and listen to music. The temptation is head down, scrunched shoulders and small, fast steps. The big tip here is to force your head in the air, look where you are going, breathe deeply and take in your surroundings. If you walk past people, make some eye contact and smile, even say hello if it is appropriate. Changing your body language and trying to connect with the world around you, be it people, the trees, the sea or whatever you see when you are walking will help you to clear your head, think and feel better.
Workplace Tip # 2 Have THE conversation
Address what has caused your bad day. Don’t brush the situation under the carpet; address it. As Brene Brown tells us in her fantastic TED talk, have the courage to be vulnerable. Open up and talk the situation through no matter how hard this is.
Workplace Tip #3 Ignore the voice in your head
Don’t let the voice in your head make it worse. You can go from “that didn’t go well” to “everything is a disaster, I am useless, everyone (even the cat) hates me” in one conversation in your head. Once you have identified the problem, change your mindset, learn, plan for the future and move on.
Workplace Tip #4 Look after your well being
Self-Care, the healthy way – don’t confuse this with self-sabotage. Hitting the town is not what the idea. Maybe go for a run, get an early night, say something positive to another person. Laughing is also a proper release. Watch a funny film or video clip or look through your pictures at all the good times you have had and kind people that love you. Do whatever it is that makes you feel good and value yourself.
Workplace Tip #5 Let off steam
Vent and rant – If you have a good friend or colleague who won’t turn what you say into a pity party, then call them. Choose a friend who will mostly listen to you and not say very much. Verbalising what has happened to someone not involved is often a great way to rationalise the situation. Be careful here to choose the right person. You don’t want at this point for someone to say… “you think you are having a bad day, that is nothing you will never guess what my day has been like….!”
These are just five tips that the Workplace members came up with that they use to help them get through the tough times.
