Workplace opened in 2015 and spear-headed the 21st century trend for remote and coworking. It provides a beautifully designed space which has all of the high tech facilities required to make shared space and coworking as seamless as sitting at a desk in a traditional office space.
We are a small but valuable part of this revolution
We are proud to consider ourselves a small but very valuable part of this coworking revolution, and in our own small way, we would like to consider ourselves trend setters!
As I sit with other coworkers in the comfortable lounge, making full use of the high-speed internet and free coffee and biscuits supplied at Workplace. I stare out of one of the beautiful, semi-circular windows which flood the space with natural light, and contemplate how the history of the building and my own personal history are inextricably linked with what we are creating today.
Coworking is continuing in the footsteps of those before us.
We see ourselves as trendsetters but in truth, the building and the people that occupied it before us have all been trendsetters in their own time. We are simply continuing in the steps of those who have gone before us - each contributing - then and now - to Manchester's rich history of cutting edge technology and style.
It starts with Churchgate House itself. Re-developed to provide its tenants with high spec, state of the art facilities. Manchester and in particular the weaving industry generated much of Britain's 19th century wealth, as well as pioneering technological and ground breaking achievements. The floor that Workplace occupies was previously the weaving floor for a textile manufacturer. Here we are in the 21st century we are pioneering another new style of working and contributing to the growth of Manchester's new technology and business revolution.

Tootal Broadhurst and Lee Co who made the iconic Tootal Ties first occupied Churchgate House. Tootal is one of England's oldest brands but has continually been at the forefront of fashion. It created ties and scarves which were a key fashion accessory during world war two and will be forever associated with the RAF look. They were a dominant feature of both the Mod and New Romantic look and are once again in vogue as an essential accessory for today's man. Favoured by style icons such as Noel Gallagher and televisions Sherlock Holmes - Benedict Cumberbatch.
On a more personal note, my family business is the supply of weaving machinery. My father-in-law and brother-in-law frequented these offices in the days when it was busily involved in the high tech business of weaving the Tootal Tie. Here I sit now, busily using another high tech fibre of the internet kind. I'm sure my father-in-law would never in his wildest dreams have imagined that!
Whoever wishes to foresee the future must consult the past; for human events often resemble those of preceding times said Machiavelli and I think he had a point!
